Syarhei Kavalenka has spent 23 days in a solitary confinement

In the evening of August 24 Sergei Kavalenka called home and said that he was released a week ago from a solitary confinement and went straight to the colony hospital because of a cold.
 

Maira Mora monitors Kavalenka’s situation

Mrs Maira Mora, the Head of the European Union Delegation to Belarus, informed that she is in constant contact with the wife and the mother of a political prisoner, Sergei Kavalenka. His situation was a topic of her conversation with the Belarusian authorities. Currently there are conducted discussions on the new steps that can be  taken to help the Belarusian oppositionist.
 

Siarhey Kavalenka is placed in a lock-up

Siarhey Kavalenka, who is now serving his sentence in the penal colony 19 in Mogilev, was placed in a disciplinary cell, his wife Alena Kavalenka told BelaPAN. According to her, on August 10th she together with the lawyer visited the colony , where they found out that Siarhey had been placed in a disciplinary cell on July 28th – right after the meeting with his relatives. “First he was sentenced to 9 days in the isolation cell, but while serving those he received 7 days more. This means he will only leave the lock-up on August 14th”, - says Alena Kavalenka.

Kavalenka appealed for pardon "not to play shell game with a hangman"

Siarhey Kavalenka's wife has explained political prisoner´s  decision to write aan appeal for pardon. According to Alena Kavalenka, the colony administration´s representatives had been visiting her husband for 8 days demanding from him to write a penitential letter which would tell that Siarhey supposedly had beaten up special police troops and that putting a white-red-white flag on the New Year Tree in Vitebsk in 2010 was an act of hooliganism rather than a political one. Kavalenka refused to write such a letter.

Deputy of the German Bundestag has supported campaign "Free Kavalenka"

MarieLouise Beck, deputy of the German Bundestag has supported campaign of solidarity with Belarusian political prisoner, Syarhei Kavalenka "Free Kavalenka"  and has joined  petition with the demand of rehabilitation and releasing him. 
 
MarieLuise Beck  is involved in Godparenthood campaign, initiated by Libereco. As a part of this campaign, she took over a prisoner’s godparenthood for another Belarusian political prisoner, Igor Olinevich

Syarhei Kavalenka’s punishment – 10 days in solitary confinement

The political prisoner told his wife about the punishment in the recent letter.

Since 18 June, the Conservative Christian Party of the Belarusian People's Front activist Siargey Kavalenka has been kept in a solitary confinement as a punishment. The political prisoner’s wife Alena Kavalenka has shared with Radio Svaboda the information that she got from the reformatory:

 

- Today I’ve received a letter from Siargey. The last paragraph was obviously written hastily after the letter was finished. I quote:

Vladimir Bukovsky, a leading member of the dissident movement and a human rights defender, has become a co-author of the petition calling for immediate rehabilitation of Syarhei Kavalenka and releasing him.

MEP Migalski calls to send letters to Amnesty International

According to the terminology of the international organization, a prisoner of conscience is a person jailed because of his or her political or religious beliefs.
Belarusian Syarhei Kavalenka, sentenced to imprisonment for hanging out a Belarusian national white-red-white flag, suffered from repression for his political views, struggle for democratic values and a free Belarus. Member of the European Parliament Marek Migalski thinks the Amnesty International should recognize Syarhei Kavalenka either political prisoner or prisoner of conscience.
